About the course

This Quality Assured Level 3 Diploma Course in Child Development is designed for people with an interest in the Psychology and Sociology of the early years and would like to increase their knowledge or gain knowledge in this important field.

The Level 3 Course has both a practical and an applied component and delivers a wide syllabus of topics to provide the student with an introduction to the width and breadth of the subject area. The course will be of great benefit to those who are currently working with children or are wishing to learn more about children. Issues that impact upon raising children and the early years of development will be studied.

For those interested in pursuing a career in Social Care will find this course will provide essential background for the subject area and other child related discipline. There are eleven modules to this course designed to encourage student led research. Students will then complete an online examination at the end of the course to receive their final grade.

Course Content

The course will contain the following topic areas:

Module 1 – Defining Childhood

In the first module students will look at definitions of childhood throughout the ages, providing a useful background for the whole course and will encourage students to consider the impact of society upon the developing child.

Module 2 – Pregnancy and Family Life

This Module will look at family patterns and the wider social network that surrounds the child. Students will examine the impact that having a baby will have upon relationships with others. Much emphasis will be placed upon changing patterns of family life and issues such as Religion, Family Income and Industrialisation.

Module 3 – The Developing Baby

Students will examine foetal development from conception to the birth in this module. Issues connected with the post birt period will be examined and essential practical aspects of preparation stages for the arrival of the baby will be discussed.

Module 4 – Theoretical Approaches to the Study of Childhood

This module will focus on the work of Charles Darwin, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky. These main theoretical approaches will all be considered and studied, together with an assessment of the practical contribution their writings have actually made to the raising of children in the present day.

Module 5 – Emotional Development

The importance of the emotional development will be discussed together with a presentation of the writings of Sigmund Freud and John Bowlby. The implications of the work of both men will be discussed in relation to modern day parenting and day care.

Module 6 – Day Care

With the effects of the changing family, many parents are finding day care is essential in order to allow parents to pursue their careers. It is an progressively more important part of parenting and the reactions of children to day care will be examined in this module. The problems of assessing day care and the implications of flawed research in this area will be discussed. The importance of good quality care will be emphasised and students will be encouraged to identify those aspects of care that they feel are beneficial and important to both the physical, intellectual and social development of children in the early years.

Module 7 – The Developing Self

In this module students will look at the development of the self concept will be discussed. Students will be able to identify the important aspects of development of the self concept in the early years and will also be able to identify the ‘risk’ factors that can impact upon healthy self development.

Module 8 – The Social Development of Children

Children’s peers can largely influence the development of a child suggesting children do not grow up in isolation. All children are likely to be involved in the school system. The importance of getting on with others in a school setting and the impact (both positive and negative) of peer relationships in childhood will be discussed. Issues such as bullying will be presented in this module and students will be encouraged to think about strategies that can be developed to foster positive school interaction.

Module 9 – The Development of Play

The importance of play to the developing child will be discussed, together with parental issues in relation to play. The different types and functions of play throughout the life cycle will be described. Issues such as play and socio-economic class and gender differences will be presented so that students may be better informed about the impact of play on all aspects of development.

Module 10 – Development in Adolescence

The adolescence period is a time of transition and great changes in the life of the child will be visible. Adolescence is often identified as a negative period in the life of the child but it is the aim of this section of the Course to examine both the physical and emotional changes of adolescence and to emphasis not only the negative impact of adolescence but also the positive impact that adolescence can have in the life cycle.

Module 11 – Developmental Problems

Students will be introduced to some of the developmental problems associated with the early years. Some of the people who can assist with these problems will be identified along with guidance on training for the major professions involved in child development.

Entry Requirements

All students must per 16 years of age and above.

This will require a minimum prior learning of the subject to GCSE standard (not required to have the GCSE itself) in orderfor students to manage study and the assumed knowledge within course content.
