About the courseThis course in Biology focuses on two approaches:
This particular course will offer both these approaches in combination, so students will benefit from a mixed approach – a perfect solution for distance learners as it offers flexibility. The assessment criteria /structure is the same for each approach. Each topic will be followed with a tutor marked assignment, which can be emailed to your tutor as an attachment in either a Microsoft Word, Works or plain RTF format. Upon contacting your tutor for the first time you will receive notification of important guidelines for assignments. There is a project within the AS award which will expect distance learning students to reflect on both practical biological knowledge as well as theoretical. This project will be based upon a field visit but does not require students to have laboratory access. Your examinations will need to be taken at an official examination centre. The project will also be marked and moderated by an independent coursework marker at the centre you choose to sit your examinations. There may be a fee for the marking, depending on the location and this will be due at the time of examination. All distance learning students should download the Private Candidates Handbook from Edexcel?s website which gives you guidance on finding an examination centre and registering. Likewise, International students need to download the specific handbook for them, which will give alternative examination arrangements etc. The information mentioned above can be found at www.edexcel.org.uk Additional resources and support will be available online via the course and your tutor. The whole course is assessment objectives based and combines a number of learning outcome expectations. The assessment objective weightings for the AS award are as follows:
